After our
late night return, we had a leisurely day to tour Antofagasta. Our luxurious
tour bus displayed its fabulous sound system. It sounded just like a live
mariachi band. That day we saw a monument marking the Tropic of Capricorn as
well as “La Portada,” a famous arch just north of town.
The next day we flew to the
resort city of La Serena, which is on Chile’s Pacific coast near Cerro Tololo, Gemini South, and Cerro Mamalluca

observatories on the next day. |

Still in the Atacama Desert, these observatories
are located a couple of hours inland in the coastal mountains. We traveled
through miles of agriculture, principally grape vineyards growing produce
for the United States. Then we turned up into the costal mountains and
journeyed up to our first destination – Cerro Tololo. Upon arrival, we first
toured the 1.5-meter telescope. After talking with an astronomer about his
research, we went into the 4-meter
dome. This |

telescope, a twin of
the 4-meter telescope at Kitt Peak, is an impressive sight on its large
horseshoe mount. |
