Granite
Quarry / Philae / Embark MS Salacia / Temple of Kom Ombo |
|
| |
This morning, we値l visit an ancient granite quarry to see an
unfinished obelisk that would have been Egypt痴 tallest at 138 feet had
it not cracked during the carving process. At the quarry it will become
clear just how stone was extracted in ancient times. Next, we値l visit
the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Between 1972 and
1980, this massive complex was disassembled and moved to higher ground
to save it from being submerged. The positioning of the buildings and
landscaping has been carefully recreated to accurately depict the
original ancient site.
This afternoon we値l board
the elegant MS Salacia, one of the few vessels cruising the Nile that
meet US safety and health standards. After settling into our staterooms,
we値l gather for lunch aboard ship and begin our Nile cruise to the
Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile-headed god, Sobek, and
the falcon-headed god, Haroeris. This picturesque temple on a hill
overlooking the Nile is divided symmetrically, with the northern side
honoring Sobek and the southern side honoring Haroeris. Of special
interest here are the surgical instruments depicted in the reliefs on
the temple walls.

Edfu / Esna Lock |
|
| |
Awaken to a relaxing morning cruise down the Nile to Edfu, where we値l
travel by horse-drawn buggies through Edfu to visit the almost perfectly
preserved Temple of Horus. The ever-dark rooms are unchanged since ancient
times, and some of the cartouches for the royal name are empty, indicating
how swiftly the throne could change hands. This afternoon we値l continue
our Nile cruise to Esna lock where we will spend the night. |

Karnak Temple / Luxor Temple |
|
|
|
 |
|
We値l continue our cruise this morning to Luxor to
visit the magnificent Temple of Luxor. Much smaller than Karnak
Temple, Luxor is nevertheless well preserved, built by Amenophis lll
for Amun, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu. There痴 a magical
atmosphere here that provides a perfect introduction to the temples of
Upper Egypt.
After lunch, we値l visit
the magnificent Temple of Karnak. Built by 12th-dynasty kings at the
beginning of the second millennium BC, this massive complex was added to, rebuilt, and enlarged
for almost 1,500 years to honor the gods and the pharaohs. |

Valley of the Kings / Cairo |
|
| |
Early this morning we will board our motorcoach and cross the Nile
to the West Bank. Passing by the Colossi of Memnon - a pair of
75-foot-tall statues towering over the plain - we will visit the Valley of
the Kings, site of some 62 excavated tombs, including the famous Tomb of
Tutankhamen. We値l also stop at the Temple of Hatshepsut, a monument
partially cut from the hillside, which contains some renowned reliefs
depicting important events of Queen Hatshepsut痴 life. Nearby, the Valley
of the Queens contains at least 75 tombs, including one of the finest in
Egypt - the tomb of Queen Nefertari. Pending permission (the government
rotates availability of tombs), we値l plan an optional visit into this
exquisite site.
Our flight back to
Cairo will arrive in the late afternoon. Join us this evening for our
farewell dinner. |
